Lt. Governor Cagle and Senator Miller Welcome Hall County’s
Dr. Tom Smiley as Chaplain of the Day
ATLANTA
(Feb 1, 2011) – Lt. Governor Casey Cagle and Sen. Butch
Miller (R-Gainesville) welcomed Dr. Tom Smiley, senior pastor of Lakewood Baptist Church in Gainesville, Ga. to serve as the Chaplain of the Day on February 1, 2011 in the Senate. “It was an honor to welcome Pastor Smiley to the Senate today. The tradition of the Senate to begin each day with a devotional and prayer allows us to set our mind and heart in the right direction as we make important policy decisions. As we face daunting challenges during this session, I’m confident that the Senate will answer the call to serve. Today, Pastor Smiley’s message encouraged Senators and inspired each of us to lead our Senate in the right direction,” Lt. Governor Casey Cagle said. “I was proud to introduce Tom to my colleagues in the Senate,” said Sen. Miller. “Today the Capitol welcomed advocates dedicated to ending the commercial sexual exploitation of children, and in that spirit, Tom delivered a heart-felt message about protecting the innocence of children in our communities. We will keep his words in our hearts as we evaluate legislation affecting our young people.” Dr. Smiley first joined Lakewood Baptist Church as pastor in 1990. Under his direction, the church has expanded to 3000 members in weekly attendance. The church recently marked its 20
th anniversary
with a tribute from its mission outpost in Guatemala and a salute from the Georgia women’s prison where church members help counsel inmates. He also helps spread his passionate messages as an athletic coach, author, radio commentator, and online minister and blogger. Dr. Smiley, a native of Gum Branch, attended Brewton-Parker College in Mount Vernon and Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, and he earned a master’s degree from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C. and a Doctor of Ministry from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur. He and his wife currently live in Gainesville and have two adult sons.
